Choosing the Right Dog for Your Kids

Families everywhere choose to get dogs for their kids so that they always have someone to play with, and as a way to help teach their kids responsibility. However, not every dog breed can put up with the challenges that a kid or multiple kids can pose. Choosing the right kind of dog is very important because it has to be able to put up with kids without becoming mean or aggressive towards them. The following are some dogs that are absolutely perfect for this role:

?

Bulldog

– Bulldogs are amazing choices for a family dog for several reasons. For starters, they are sturdy and can take just about anything that kids can (literally) throw at them. This means that they can handle any amount of roughhousing without being accidentally hurt by an over-excited kid. They’re also comfortable in any size of building, which makes them great for apartments or any house. Add all that on top of their easygoing and docile nature, and you get a dog who will remain calm no matter what, making Bulldogs a great choice for a family dog.

Newfoundland

– Known as Nature’s Nannies or Nature’s Babysitters, Newfoundlands are great dogs for families. Despite their large size, they are actually very gentle and are great with children of all ages. Their large size means that they require more open space than a smaller dog, but they make up for it by being very loving and gentle. Although they can drool and shed quite a bit, they more than make up for it by having a great temperament.

Vizsla

– This lesser-known breed is a very gentle dog that is perfect for families with very young children. Not only are they intensely loyal, but they are also smart and can learn quickly, which makes them very easy to train. Although they are not all that well known outside of their native country of Hungary, the quiet dogs are becoming more popular in other countries as good choices for household dogs. They do require more exercise than other breeds, but that allows them to play with kids longer.

Irish Setter

– Irish Setters are very energetic and a perfect match for grade school kids who have a lot of energy as well. This breed is a better fit for families who have yards, as their energy can be destructive if contained in the house. Not only are they full of energy, but their playful nature keeps them excited and able to deal with kids at all times. However, the lifespan of an Irish Setter is about twelve years, which means that families may be teaching kids some life lessons while they are still in middle school. Other than that, these are perfect dogs to have.

There are hundreds of choices for dog breeds for families and they all have their own pros and cons. Although these four breeds above are all very good they may not be the best fit for you or your family. By considering size, energy, and playfulness you can generally have a good idea of how well a dog will fit into your house, and be the newest member of your family.
